Finally started reading again, and his escape was just for a cheap cliffhanger. He escaped, turned up where other people were, killed the second-in-command who could just as well have been killed by the enemy wizards, took the detective's wife hostage, then we switched to another character, then had his arm ripped off by the other wizard.
