Utah schools cannot go remote-only during COVID-19 outbreaks, without legislative approval
One mom on social media wrote: “I had no idea that they couldn't shutdown schools for outbreaks. I am rethinking everything.” Another said: “So they’re going to keep schools open no matter how many students and staff are sick?”
Last fall, schools with outbreaks could close for two weeks of virtual learning in coordination with local health officials.
Sen. Todd Weiler (R-Woods Cross) ushered in the change earlier this year with Senate Bill 107. Now, schools can only go remote-only with approval from the governor, the leaders of both legislative chambers and the state superintendent.
