AP: Use of slurs not ‘isolated’ at Louisiana State Police

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A Black trooper with the Louisiana State Police was on a break when his cellphone buzzed with an unusual voice message. It was from a white colleague, unaware his Apple Watch had recorded him, blurting out the Black trooper’s name followed by a searing racial slur.

“F----- n----, what did you expect?”

That unguarded moment, sent in a pocket-dial of sorts, touched off an internal investigation at Louisiana’s premier law-enforcement agency that remained under wraps for three years before a local television station reported last month that the white trooper had not even been reprimanded for the racist recording.

“I believe this to be an isolated incident and I have great confidence in the men and women who serve in the Louisiana State Police,” the agency’s outgoing head, Col. Kevin Reeves, said in response to the controversy.

Kentucky State Police training slideshow quotes Hitler, advocates ‘ruthless’ violence

One slide, titled “Violence of Action,” in addition to imploring officers to be “ruthless killer,” instructs troopers to have “a mindset void of emotion” and to “meet violence with greater violence.”

A line from Adolf Hitler’s fascist and anti-Semitic manifesto, Mein Kampf, is featured in the slide: “the very first essential for success is a perpetually constant and regular employment of violence.”

The presentation also links to a Hitler page on Goodreads, a database of quotes and books.

Two other slides quoting Hitler bring his total to three, making him the most quoted person in the presentation.

KSP Lt. Curt Hall, whose name is used on the presentation, was referred to as teaching a “warrior mentality," per KSP Captain James Goble. Goble’s statement was used in a deposition on Oct. 14, Manual RedEye revealed.

It’s reported that Hall has since retired from the force but served as the assistant commander at the KSP Academy from 2005 to 2015. He also served as the KSP commander of internal affairs before his retirement.
