Is there a good reason for 3 frames?

How many distinct frames would you like to see in Em-8er

So far the only information I know about the 3 different frames is that the light can use 2 melee weapons, the medium can dual wield secondary weapons and the heavy can equip a shield. Beyond that I assume there will be a number of abilities restricted to each frame.

My question as the title states is whether there is really a need for the Medium frame.

Dual weapons feels like a bit of a gimmick and as another thread has already illustrated, sounds like it could be problematic unless your just firing twice as much at the same target.

Player interest also seems to be a bit low as well so far. I looked at the omniframe suggestion list and tallied up all of the frame suggestions. The current numbers are:

26 Light
14 Med
27 Heavy

There were actually more medium frames than I had originally thought on my first perusal but you can still see it is still fairly low compared to the other two. My personal feelings based on the limited data we have so far would be to use the already created omni-frame design for the heavy and merge the intended skills for the medium frame into either light or heavy frame as applicable. That would give us two frames with a bit more customization.

Thoughts?

To me they all have a place

Light is going to be really fun with the melee i can imagine

Medium is going to be like a space cowboy hope it can do gun kata and do max payne style slow-mo hmm that would be fun :D

Heavy is going to be the beast with big shield and big weapon slow and tanky

Not if it is given a unique gun playstyle that others cannot do e.g. some slow-mo max payne ability or have unique dual weapons that for example one gun could fire a incendiary shot and other gun could fire an ice shot or whatever combination.

I like the way robocop holsters his gun in his thigh maybe it could be the same for the mech?

There is more than just specific frame weaponry, heavier frames will have more powerful reactors, which are the omniframe's energy source.

Taken right from there : ( https://em8er.com/omniframe-gameplay-systems/ )

You also have to consider, on the subject of medium omniframes being unused, that this frame is a good all rounder. Lots and lots of small factors change the frame's role/specialisation on the battlefield, and if i go according to my logic of good all rounder, medium omniframes will also make very good field/squad leaders. (like that one medium omniframe idea i posted in the other thread, which I named "Warmaster")

That aside, some extra omniframes further in the game's development would be awesome. (perhaps new frames would be specialised on a single duty? like some of the ideas here https://forums.em8er.com/threads/th...s-description-in-the-knight-tabletop-rpg.862/ )

Honestly more cause insanity and well more options means more people are very very different. would be nice to avoid metas. but a meta would form no mater what for certain types
That's true, but mostly because the word meta got deformed to actually mean "most used precisely defined build/setup" nowadays.

how fun melee is depends on how fast it is and timing for combos and stuff.
If the light frame have higher movement than the other frames then melee combat may feel better and be more efficient in the game.

But if there is no difference between frames other than how much weight each frame can handle,. then yeah melee option would suck when compared to other weapons.

but since it has been pointed out that frame choice will affect speed, power & armor...

***

and quite honestly until players got something to play with, you can't really gauge player interest in a specific stuff in a game.
If you look at that poll, people are using what they know of other games to brain storm ideas.

I am not disagreeing with your comments here, but I'm not sure if it addresses the actual question, does all of that actually require 3 frames to accomplish? how a frame will be is entirely up to the user, I would assume you would be able to make a light frame that is like a space cowbow, and I'm sure a heavy frame can be fun with melee too.

(Also I would wager that time changing abilities would be difficult to do in a multiplayer setting, though it does sound like fun :) )

When i first heard of em8er and that it will have customizable mechs, i thought that it was gonna be one frame that we build on and create how we want.
And that 'light' 'medium' and 'heavy' were just presets.
But i guess they have reasons why they're going with the 3 different bases.

Ah yes abilities have to be changed in areas like in firefall the frame garage unless there is deployable frame garage hmmm i dont know

It is like the story of the 3 bears :p

My porridge is too hot = heavy
My porridge is too cold = light
My porridge is just right = medium

Not the greatest example but i like lol

Do we actually require 3 well i think we dont really, but but its nice not everyone wants to play heavy or light sometimes they might want to play something in the middle that has enough power and not as heavy as heavy also each frame needs to have something specific that other frames do not have a frame passive/ability and characteristic that is enhanced with that specific frame

I like that there is a medium lets say that your a medic and need to be abit more tanky but still be able to move quite well
medium is here to save the day!

We dont require 3 but 3 gives the option and option is good if there was more than 3 frame then it would be too much i think hmm

I would like to see zero distinct frames in Em-8er. In fact, I would like to see zero frames at all. Frames would make it too easy. Everyone should be forced to run around naked. Also, no guns. Only sticks and rocks. Three different sizes of sticks, and three different sizes of rocks. That way, people still have choices.

I will say 3 frame weights is a bit off, maybe they stay but the more stuff you add onto your frame the more weight you gain, slowing you down and such. it will be easy to make a heavy frame, but not as easy to make that heavy frame really good. However making a light frame really good might be harder? of course the heavier you get the more health in general unless you have the nonsense that is my third frame idea "hunker" in the make your own frame thread. though again thats just notsense and I still no like the name. idk my train of thought here.

I see 3 frames as a way to extend "replayability" because it will give us a reason to play in each of the 3, even if one becomes our favorite.

If we have just one frame we customize we'll get what we like through that customization, but we'll also in the same way limit ourselves to that one customized frame.

It sounds a bit backwards thinking, but in FF playing all the different frames with their different aspects made things more interesting - even though I had clear favorites.

Sure we are all in the same war and not repeating a story line or quest line so "replayability" is not really the right term.. maybe it is more like adding to the endgame. We play through with a light frame and really like it but begin to get that endgame feeling, and having 2 other frames to optimize and tweak gets us out of that.

So, I say 3 is fine with me. I'll likely spend most of my time in light or medium, but I won't ignore heavy either.

Fantastic the rocks can be painted in all sorts of patterns to ward off predators!
em8er and rust dev's to work together confirm? :p

Just because I didn't mention decals doesn't mean I forgot about them. I'm actually hoping I can run a bootleg tattoo shop in game, so I can plaster one on your chest with a razor blade, and some pen ink. I'll find a special Torgue stick for you too. Full of knots and everything.
