I'd say those little sections are where the pilot's arms are "tucked in"

The legs seem too short and too fat in the upper part and that breaks the proportions for me. Especially noticible from the back.

To be fair, battleframes in Firefall had no sturdy connections between the arms/hands and the body. In that case I chalked it up to the gauntlets on those frames being anti-gravity.

In the future pilots don't need arms, as everything is controlled by the mind, so they are surgically removed before depolyment in a battle suit. This reduces the cockpit space needed, making the mechs more cost effective.

Their arms are re-attached after each mission so they can relax and enjoy a nice cool beverage with their fellow pilots.
