Newark cops, with reform, didn’t fire a single shot in 2020
Newark Police officers did not fire a single shot during the calendar year 2020, and the city didn’t pay a single dime to settle police brutality cases. That’s never happened, at least in the city’s modern history.
At the same time, crime is dropping, and police recovered almost 500 illegal guns from the street during the year.
“This is significant,” says Aqeela Sherills, head of the Newark Community Street Team, a group of mostly former offenders who work to defuse violence in the city’s most violent wards. “It speaks to how reform has really taken hold in the city.”
Larry Hamm, the godfather of police protests in Newark as head of the People’s Organization for Progress, agreed. “Police brutality is still a problem,” he says. “But it’s fair to say the consent decree has had a real impact.”

The scrape includes user profile data, user information, and which users had administration rights for specific groups within the social network. Twitter user @donk_enby, who first announced about the scrape, claims that over a million video URLs, some deleted and private, were taken.
“These are original, unprocessed, raw files as uploaded to Parler with all associated metadata,” claims one of the authors.
Security researchers claim that the scrapped posts are linked to accounts that posted them, and some of the video and image data have geolocation information. That is said also to include data from Parler’s “Verified Citizens,” users of the network who verified their identity by uploading photographs of government-issued IDs, such as a driver’s license.

But if law enforcement officials were in fact caught off guard, it wasn’t for lack of warning: Insurrectionists were writing openly online about their goal to violently invade the Capitol for weeks before they did so, on several social media platforms. The term “Storm the Capitol” was used a whopping 100,000 times online in the month before January 6, according to a New York Times article that cited Zignal Labs, a media insights company. Many of these posts appeared in comments on viral tweets, and included explicit details about how to get inside the Capitol building.
Some of the commenters were militia members and supporters of the QAnon conspiracy theory. “Pack a crowbar,” one person wrote on the social media site Gab, which is popular among the far right. “Does anyone know if the windows on the second floor are reinforced?” someone asked in another thread, according to the Times.

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf resigned on Monday, making him the third Cabinet-level official to quit the Trump administration since the violence at the Capitol last week.
Wolf said his stepping down was “warranted by recent events, including the ongoing and meritless court rulings regarding the validity of my authority as Acting Secretary.”
“These events and concerns increasingly serve to divert attention and resources away from the important work of the Department in this critical time of a transition of power,” Wolf wrote in a letter to Department of Homeland Security staff.
