Reason 1: (my head-canon) The Tsi-Hu, especially the massive ones, require so many bullets to take down that the pilot is able to use the bullet holes to "see though" the enemy before it dies.
Reason 2: It sounds close enough to the original to be a simple corruption of the phrase into English.
