Inspired by @EvilKitten 's comment in Discord, there is a problem of what NPCs will do while their base is under attack.

In other games, they'll stand around doing the same old stuff.

However, I propose that a common set/type of NPC is automatically deployed upon the foundation of the base, and each additional installation which the playerbase unlocks will spawn additional NPCs. These NPCs have pre-set responses to an attack, being to run inside a bunker for shelter (e.g. despawn) or man "automated" base defenses (e.g. a turret the players have built)

hmmm...hiring npc defenders with a daily upkeep cost. The npcs could control bunkers, turrets, ect.

There should be a toggle rule for the base owner that would allow players to take the place of npcs during combat or that the npcs can evict or never relinquish their position. Just like in battlefield games where admins could usurp vehicle seats from other players.
