Death and respawn?

In many MMORPG, death is just nothing but relocation with penalties, in experience, money or other things..

In UO, if your character died you had to play in a ghost until you met someone who could revive you with magic or bandages(what?). I only played WoW in closed beta but I remember it had the same concept of death and revival.
In SWG, there was no ghost but a bacta tank was used for bringing dead back to life.
Planetside wasn't RPG but it still explained respawn system in nano technology.

Background of Ember is set in the future. I wonder what kind of technology will be used to make dead people back on their feet?

I personally think that reconstruction of body sounds cool.

A group dying while escorting a T.H.M.P.R. back to base, will be one of the main factors on how you respawn.

Cloning. A machine just poops out another version of us. Call it DNA 3D printing if you need to.
No, you have to stay yourself. Not a clone. IMO it could print a soulless shell so that your soul moves to it after you die.

Are we going to enter the philosophical debate of what defines "yourself", conscience and if a perfect clone would be an entire different being or not?

Are we still capable of playing on in ghost form? I'm afraid if not, you will not will everyone over. If a person has to wait for somebody else or an AI to come along and revive them you are going to end up with people getting tired of waiting around. A small penalty to be cloned or materialized at an outpost is one thing but actual down time could get old fast.

Clones are a perfect explanation of why you can respawn in a sci-fi game
There are many possible death penalities that do not involve the tedious task of running to a revival station as a ghost (do ghosts even exist in this game universe?)
-Partial gear/inventory loss: when you die your omniframe activates it's emergency teleport and return to the base, since it was damaged you can't recover 100% of it and some modules/weapons can be lost (or dropped in the ground).
-Death sickness: your new body just came out of the incubation tube, you will be in a weakened state for a few minutes, dying while in death sickness would delay your respawn as the next body is not ready yet.
-Medical bills: respawning could be very expensive, in most games the cost is usually unnoticeable, but in Ember it could be half of your cash or liquid assets
-Frame ineficiency: Your omniframe needs a while to fully sincronize with your new body, and won't operate in full power until it can do so.

They 3D print your body, and right before you die, in a split second a chip in your head establishes connection between your current body and the one that is waiting in storage back at the base. Your memories and conscience than starts to inhibit two bodies at the same time, but when your current body dies, the conscience gets pushed to only option, the body at the base. So you wake up there and go along with your day.

(Your stuff also gets restored by insurance company who is constantly tracking on what you are wearing)

Its that simple folks :D

When HP reaches zero slow-motion kicks in and everything turns black 'n white 'n gray (kinda like in GTA5). Your head dissembles in tiny building block and thru FTL travel teleports to the nearest reconstruction site where your head is reassembled. Soon after, the rest of your body gets teleported limb by limb and your body is reassembled. Damaged organs and limbs are replaced/repaired/healed/welded/folded on the spot.

How about you are connected to two bodies the whole time. One in an induced coma and one live. As soon as your live body dies you wake up in the spare body as if you were dreaming. This would be more practical then pushing 2.5 petabytes of data from one brain to the other wireless in a split second.

Then again, I don't believe in transfer of consciousness. That is why I propose an emergency brain teleportation. All the rest is of lower priority with testicles and vivaria being next on the priority list XD

How about every player has a chip, takes 1 seconds for friendly or others to remove it and 1 second to put into a new omniframe clone

This omniframe clone has to be called down and would take 10 seconds to arrive. So 12 seconds to revive a person.

If chip not retrieved in 4 seconds, the chip would auto relinquish itself and player would lose all the things they gained from the time they went back to base or a safe point. It is like a checkpoint system but for multiple player.

I think a real body held in stasis with remote control of a clone or machine could be plausible. Kind of like the Avatar movie with the blue aliens. The idea of having our omniframes as robots that we remotely control would be cool. What was the last big FPS game or MMO where the character you controlled was a robot?

I'm of the mind that we DON'T die.

Instead when near death and incapacitated, our battle frames perform an emergency teleport to the nearest........whatever. Way-station, friendly watchtower, etc., where we are healed by a crack team of EMTs back to a certain percentage of max health, ready to enter action again.

When you die, Gordon Ramsay appears and starts criticizing your poor effort just before you close your eyes.
Bam.
Done.
10/10 best game.

Nah. As much as I love e.g.: Borderlands, it would make the player characters and their existence feel awkward. Clones, digital prints...etc.

*shudder*
Like corpserunning as a ghost is not awkward. The whole respawining and your char immortality idea is awkward. But almost noone likes permadeath that is not awkward for sure :D So cloning is the most logical explanation you will ever get in games. Sci-fi ones especially

But the deaths don't really happen. They aren't necessarily canon to the game's story, even if the manner in which character's may respawn is believably established (as is with Borderlands, where the whole digi-structing thing is there, but none of the player character actually die, that's just for the game's sake, to have them respawn, otherwise *spoiler* Roland, in BL2, or *major spoiler* Scooter dying in Tales from the Borderlands, wouldn't be an issue).

In Firefall, the player's character never actually dies, either.

Let's not turn it into Dark Souls, for example. Just penalize the player some. Either damage to their equipment that needs repairing for larger sums or loss of resources in another way.

Guys, you remember Ophanim? They had arcporters on their most important commanders. They teleported injured soldier to a base. IMO we could have the same thing.

When we are laying on the ground screaming "help!" we are already ready to teleport. When we are respawning or our backup hp reaches 0, we are teleported to the nearest man-arcporter. We are than healed and we can go back to fight. How about that?
