what came first Re:Zero the manga or Re:Zero the anime?
because in the various mangas... he's actually uses the power a bit smarter. The plotline moves along faster as well.
I haven't seen the anime, but I figure the creators behind it have to do this so that they don't out pace the author. It's either that or a lot of filler.

in the manga, the first few deaths he didn't realize what was happening. He was thinking it was some sort of deja vu type or dream or it was another day. But after that he gets past that crap he uses it for his advantage but he still doesn't want to die and reset because dying is painful. At the same time he wants to be in those situations first because that means the people he loves may not die before a reset point.
It's also screwing him up. He makes a lot of mistakes because his memories of past lives with people that doesn't have those experiences now. He's relying on his memories after multiple trauma of death is bound to screw him up.
