Mesopotamian mythology is full of nightmare fuel if you are interested. I got interested in the stuff when I read the Giglamesh mythos back in elementary school. Seeing a variation of that appearing in Movies & tv is always cool.
I remember being at an Anime/Manga convention where there was a bunch of various artists in book/film/toons/etc industry during a discussion thingy that said they regularly use old myths to create the monsters they are hired to make. I remember one artist, she was saying that was the reason why you see a lot of similarity between monsters and creature made for works across the board is because the source is the same.

I couldn't decide on ONE mythological creature so, I'll share the group of them.

Dragons as there is so many types of them. I rather like the snow dragons.
Other mythological creature i rather like is Qilin (or Kilin) which to me is like a dragon unicorn in some cases when it can be both twin horned or single horned there is some interesting mythology attached to it too. (Couldn't decide on the picture too many great and equally bad ones xD)

Chris Achilleos and Luis Royo have some of my favorite art for dragons. Careful on random viewing as they have topless women in some of their artwork. But I'll take it a step further to specify medieval dragons, NOT Asian dragons. Give me the neck, tail and four legs with large wings....not a serpent thank you!
