With onion rings, you have too many losses:
-- Have to peel off the film that separates each and every hundred-or-so layers(or else it will dry and fall off in the fryer, taking the batter with it leaving you with nasty oil and a naked onion.
-- Has to be ice cold for the batter to stick to the rings AT ALL. -_-
-- Has to use a specific type of batter just to stick to the damn onions in the first place :/
-- Need costly knives to cut them into frikkin rings without the rings breaking ! ! (though I do looooooove my new knife
