P
v0.XX.X.X = non-live version (meaning, this is a pre-alpha/alpha/beta release)
v1.XX.X.X = official release
v2.XX.X.X = released expansion
vX.22.X.X = the year it was released
vX.XX.8.X = the month it was released
vX.XX.X.1 = revision (if there's a hotfix to currently released version, replace the 1 with a 2)
What can also be added to the end of the name is the actual development milestone if one has been added, like Voxels. The end result would be: "em8er_v0.22.8.1-voxels"
This name would be put everywhere, in the file name, as the forum title, on the website. It would also be easy to find related information about it such as Twitch streams and YouTube videos regarding a particular release.
AMD does this, and it's a great and less confusing method of keeping track of versions and which dates they were released.
And, regarding the website... just naming the file isn't enough on its own, there needs to be a notification system telling people when a new version or revision has been released on top of the old one. Recently, the same link on the website has been receiving multiple revisions without notifications of when it was updated or which forum thread is related to it. Also, the download page is becoming a bit too crowded... It'd be nice if things were categorized by a dropdown menu by clicking the "Downloads" tab, and selecting appropriate section, perhaps even with a notification bell indicating which category has been updated with a new download available.
