If ember is going to be a big world and If it has a lot of water pond/beach/ etc places that makes you want to swim to cross on the other side like some occasions in FireFall you cross a pond and you get dmg because we are not able to swim!
CAN we SWIM?? is it going to be part of it? or at least swim for a small Limited time... or certain depth... being an open world..

I am not expecting this idea or section to be IN the start of the game but maybe a year after the game launches or something like that.
I would like it to be added after the game launches it is not THE most important thing but a sweet thing to think about.
it adds to the game..
i am bad at forum organizing so i don't know where to put this thread sorry if I made a bumb on the road.

and maybe we can discuss what else is allowed in the game in the sense FF we were not allowed to swim no dmg when falling from high places etc etc

Allow me to open by saying I am not opposed to swimming. I do, however, think that using liquid environments that are harmful to our meks is a good way to build maps. I get tired of endless mountain ranges that funnel player traffic in mmos, but more than even that I can't stand running into invisible walls. Water and swimming with specialized load outs would be nifty in the future, so no reason to give up all hope.

And firefall did have a way of guaranteeing death by falling, if you free fell a long enough distance your character would start doing flailing movements to which you couldn't pull out from.

yeah i know it is true my point of no dmg when falling was the normal scenario where you jump from a tall building and you dont die .. normally if you jumped from like tooo damn high places you do die in FF xD but in an normal FPS just a 2 story high building means death but thanks for your post and it helps clear the thoughts of things...
I agree with you 100%

Being in an omniframe I am looking forward to Grummz keeping the same structure to falling as in firefall. Simple and straight forward without getting too distracted by science. There were threads on factual vs fantasy science months ago. I think of a fall scenario by jetting up with a powered thrust, mentioned in another thread, to plasma shotgun blast a cat 5 kaiju in the eyeball, then getting hit with some sort of a.o.e. pulse from it to having system malfunctions all the way to the ground. Do you want to enjoy being tossed and fighting with the glide to the ground with player skill and looking like a pro with the landing? Or face plant your way to a respawn point?

*edit*

Not meaning to hijack the topic from swimming dude.

In a dedicated, instanced mission? Sure.

In the open world? No. Water serves as a terrain wall there and is far better at it than an arbitrary wall of nope.
Yes in a mission... lets say not the whole open world but a smal part like in FF when OCT started lots of people died like 5 times because it had a side that was like an ocean.. and you would miss the oct because you didnt make it...

Something instanced. Not part of the rest of the game world. We'd be using special omniframes insulated against water, not our normal frames.

Well the game is supposed to be ... we are conquering land that isn't ours for our colonies. So sooner or later we may need to conquer portions of the ocean as well.

Though I'd bet it would locked off due to equipment that needs to be crafted to make the THMPR withstand the liquid and the ominiframe parts to withstand the liquid at different depths and machines to provide air.

So different depths of the ocean gives different mine-able elements but it also increases the danger as in that you need to protect not only the THMPR but the air machine as well.

So like this scenario...
  1. You and your squad is using ocean capable omniframes venture out into the ocean.
  2. You find a suitable location and then one member of your squad that has been hauling your air machine, sets it up while your team defends him. It pulls air out of the water for you to use. Thus refilling each omniframe's limited on board air tank.
  3. You call down the ocean capable THMPR.
  4. Mine while protecting both the THMPR and the air machine. As the waves increase so do the tendency to attack the air machine more that the THMPR does as well.
  5. Remember you still need to escort the THMPR back to your base using a limited air supply. Having your only air machine explode prior to the escort phase when you got a less than full tank will be less survivable the deeper you go in the ocean.
  6. Rinse & Repeat.
It sounds like a neat possible expansion to game.

Um guys...what bodies of water are you expecting to swim in? This world isn't a water world, it's an unforgiving ball of frozen deadly chemicals. Any liquid bodies of liquid are probably highly caustic and deadly. This is a terraforming project, expect any water that exists to be religiously horded for terraforming projects. Also outside of our terraformed bubbles there probably won't be much by way of liquid bodies at all, remember it's -142 F outside of our bubbles. We are looking at dry ice temperatures here.

Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't the idea of lava and ice being just the first environments for terraforming? Aren't there stages of terraforming beyond that? It would come down to the back and forth push with the tsi-hu but i thought forest would be an eventual surrounding.
The vision book forum section covers it all.

A small water area could be where bubbles appear and where there is bubble there is gas or you could just use it as a bubble bath area for the locals?
