Every playstyle has a natural role it falls into determined by how one sets up their frame. Since everyone comes in with a way they prefer to play they will organically create their role within a group. There is also the natural roles that have been trained into people over the course of gaming history when it comes to a game like Ember.

Effectively as people figure out combinations natural lists will appear and people will name the role and playstyle that is created. You can see this clearly in another classless game Path of Exile, which is a diablo style ARPG that merges the FF7 Materia System with FF10's Sphere Grid. Where the starting character only determines initial stats and position in the passive skill tree.

We won't have same gear though.
And if you absolutely have to define a role or a class, you just go by weapon, then abilities, and lastly by armor.

At the risk of sounding like a noob, I must ask:

How will we be able to define a role when we all have the same gear?
If I had to take a crack at it there should be enough gear to build that role perfectly. Trying to find a balance between everything might leave you too far below the power curve to be effective.

Put it is like this. If a person is all about doing damage and not worrying about defence odds are they are a damage dealer, most commonly of the glass cannon play style. If a person is more focused on helping others and making sure they can do their thing odds are they are a support, most commonly a healer or a buff/debuff style. And if someone is all about protecting others by absorbing damage and taunting enemies odds are they are a tank, likely one of the masochistic play styles.

In games without a class/role system, your class is your playing style. Or your class is your personality type, as different personalities will tend to be drawn to do different things and be better at some things over others.
