"The generators are down! I repeat, the generato-" The radio transmission was suddenly interrupted by an ear curdling eruption of static, and then the coms fell silent. The soldier looked up across the mess-hall, as others of his battalion looked to one another in confusion. Across the table, Clarkson broke the silence as he went to grab his cup of water. "What did he just say, I heard something about generators?" But his reach was cut short by the Gatestrider sitting next to him, grabbing Clarkson by the wrist and nodding at the cup. "Look." The Gatestrider murmured in a sheepish tone.
-
The battalion looked over at the cup, heck, it even drew Kit's attention away from his meal... and that really took some doing. As they all gathered around, the water inside of the cup suddenly tremored. It was subtle, but noticeable. Then another tremor came, this time the whole table shook and Kit's meal fell onto the floor. Clarkson looked up at Kit, expecting him to be devastated. But instead to his surprise, the reaper who'd typically be throwing a tantrum over such a waste of a meal had his mouth wide open. He was staring through Clarkson even, no? Over him.
-
As Kit's eye's glistened orange, so did the rest of the mess-hall shortly after. Clarkson followed the rest of the gazes of his battalion, joining them as he turned to look back over his shoulder and through the large wall of windows which gave them a clear view of the bases courtyard and runway. The windows suddenly exploded into millions of pieces, falling to the floor as a gut wrenching sound boomed across the hall and sent chairs, tables and people tumbling back.
-
Clarkson stumbled to his feet, coughing and panting as a cloud of smoke and fire danced throughout the hall. Wails of despair and cries for help shortly followed as Clarkson's ear's adjusted from the high pitched buzzing. The situation almost seemed unreal, only moments before, they'd been celebrating. Now this? He looked up at the shattered windows, falling to his knees as an unrecognisable reaper screamed and ran out of the window. Flames in his stead.
-
As the chaos unravelled, the high pitched buzzing shortly returned and overwhelmed Clarkson. It stunned him as a gust of wind blew past and cleared enough of the smoke to make the outside recognisable. Then he saw it, out there on the runway. A towering silhouette, a monster.

Heavy Vs Kai-ju
So one of the most iconic visions for Em8er, is the large mecha, standing off against the large Kai-ju. It's very exciting to think about, and I think it's important that it's done right too. So I was curious to how everybody else envisioned the combat to play out between the Heavy Frame/ Mining Mechas and Kai-ju in-game.

What kind of mechanics do we want to see, how do we want these large entities to interact with one another? Will they grapple? What kind of an effect will they have on the terrain or even structures? What will this sound, look and feel like up close and afar? How will the combat compare and contrast the smaller frames?

What do you guys think?

Firstly i like the intro it got me thinking how much brute force the kaiju would have and even though it was slow could cause shock waves that resulted in environmental damage leading to parts of rocks or structures flying across as projectiles.

I'd imagine heavy units using shield surfing to ride the shock waves and the slopes of mountains to maneuver and dodge its destructive attacks.

Big bites the kaiju would have intense bites like a big alligator if your unlucky could break off limbs of the mek and this would be ever so frightening flinging a mek and seeing pilots just barely escaping.

Cloud of dust caused by the shock wave could give the kaiju a method to hide just like how the ninja's use smoke screens.

A big kaiju doesn't hide all the time but this one uses the environment to its advantage, especially when storms occur combining weather chaos and its monstrous force in simultaneous attacks.

Heavies would be ready to deploy their immense shields slamming it down even shields get damaged after repetitive damage and by cycling shields from one heavy to another they can buy time to chip away and lure it away from the densely populated regions.

Perhaps the real way to stop this kaiju is to lure it away into the wide open terrain and only then blast open an opening with an advanced vehicular mobile gateway charge, to send it back to where it came from, timing it right before it closes.

Perhaps there are weapons advanced from space like the ion cannon in C&C that would need resources and key authorization from the Reaper Council to be initiated and blast it from the skies.
This would obliterate anything in its radius and it is one tool for careful consideration as it could waste all the reapers hard work from building a place/home/base of operation all for it to be gone in an instant swoop!

Heavy frames, first and foremost, must feel heavy. The crunching of the rocks as it walks, the hydraulic whine every time it moves. The thunderous clap of the jump jets. If you don't have hearing protection within 100m of this beast, you'll go deaf.

The heavy frame must, no matter the size of the Kaiju, feel like it's a fair fight. You're piloting the biggest and baddest the Gatestrider have to offer. Even if you do look like a chew toy robot to some Kaiju.

Other frames? To a light and medium frame, you're a colossus of death. You're the only backup they need. You're cover when their shields pop. To you, they're diversions. They're repair drones. They're the "tall friend" who can quickly reach the Kaiju shield generator on the top shelf.

Ion Cannon? We don't need an Ion Cannon where we're going. Everyone, call down your THMP-Rs on my target.

One thing that absolutely must happen is some form of grappling/wrestling. There's no better way to show that two combatants are in the same weight class.

Having the ability to pin, throw, and stun larger kaiju would slot heavies neatly into the tank role when fighting in groups. Combine that with their shield, and you've got a lot of potential for a solid medium to close range playstyle focusing on damage mitigation and priority target disruption.

During one Chief Chat, there was talk about the smallest enemies being able to climb on heavies.

Maybe also any "shadow boxing" (hitting at air) melee attack would shake them off, jumping would daze them a little, and any abilities for whatever reason would knock them back in addition to whatever they do.

Plus I think it only fair that heavies get an execute on them even if they are at full health. Vary it between stomping, kicking, shield bashing, melee, etc.

Small enemies are worth it just like the face hugger in Aliens a real pain in the face.
I also like those little squid like things in firefall and its big parent that shot ink unable to see for a while.

Could there be other kinds of small enemies and how would they differ?

E.g.

- Living inside certain kinds of rock and when shattered from mining wake up and attack.
- Plant type small enemies that are territorial of their area and use the plant network to move around.
- Wind blown small eggs containing enemies tornadoes don't just bring destruction they could bring some shorties with them.
- Underground slime they are attracted by moment and stick to the target and glow then explode violently after a few seconds.
- Lab atrocities created and escaped either bring back the experiment to the lab for a bp/rewards or sell to the black market for an alternative reward.
- Micro psychos that appear in the furthest parts of the gateways sometimes creating odd sounds with errie music other times seeing strange micro apparitions and see things that don't make sense they don't do much physically and focus on psychological tactics letting the others to use telekinetic by moving objects to attack or breaking the floor surfaces etc.
