both teams are still rebuilding their mechs to be safe to the pilot while also being "deadly" to the machine. They are both committed into actually trying to make this into a sport.

Guided or fire-and-forget system. Even today our missiles don't need to be lined up perfectly with the target, but will correct its path in flight. It is faster and more efficient to use your sensor suite to designate or paint the target, than use multiple actuators throughout a mech to line up the shot perfectly. Besides, I don't think the missile tube mounting has lateral movability.

Furthermore, the curved missile path is a commonly used trope in anime.
