THE NAVELIUM ORE BUG

[Names may be changed and this might be Ronynium based, of course]

Core idea:

This is a completely native creature which evolved on EM-8ER and is inorganic in nature, but has a life cycle which might remind us of Earth creatures. It is in essense an inorganic yet biological (for EM-8ER) living refinery for Navelium.

EARLY LIFE CYCLE (LARVAL STAGE)

The first part of the Navelium Ore Bug (or NOB) is spent deep within lava pits on EM-8ER. As a larval NOB it is seldom if ever seen other than in certain instances of very deep THMPR activity by intruding humans. As larval NOB it spends it's early life processing the raw lava of EM-8ER by extracting Navelium Ore from the lave to give rise to a large quantity of concentrated Navelium Ore. Navelium Ore has an incredible specific heat and hence retains a vast quantity of heat and it's heat of fusion is very high.

MOBILE STAGE OF LARVA

When the NOB larva has amassed a certain amount of concentrated Navelium Ore, it must move to the next stage of development. This is for it to emerge from the lava in order to initiate the long and slow process of creating a NOB Egg which incubates a new NOB. For this, it requires pure Navelium. In order to get pure Navelium, if must venture out of the lava and start a gradual cooling process of the concentrated Navelium Ore. This causes the pure Navelium to crystalize out of the liquid Navelium Ore as it cools.

In order to make the cooling process occur at exactly the correct rate of cooling, the NOB Larvae will often emerge as a large group or NOB Flock. This allows the entire group to cool more slowly and obtain more pure Navelium. Hence, the LARGER THE FLOCK of NOB Larvae, the MORE PURE the Navelium will be for us humans to harvest (more to come on that).

The NOB Flock moves gradually away from the source lava, and yet not too far because it needs to seed its eggs in fresh lava...

EGG LAYING STAGE AND LAVA SEEDING

So the NOB Flock (or in some cases individual NOBs which are vast and hugely powerfull with massive amounts of Navelim) eventually cools down enough to become slow and cumbersome as the Navelium Ore finally has lost most of the pure Navelium through the recrystalization process. The result is that the NOB Flock slows and stops moving, and the NOB Larvae now have mature, intact eggs with pure Navelium as the yolks.

This is the ideal time for humans to harvest them, but the most dangerous.

The slowly solidified NOB Larva now are dormant for a period of time.

Then after this final dormant period, they DETONATE and inject their eggs (with the pure Navelim Yolks) into the ground. These detonations inject the NOB eggs deep into the ground and penetrate the thin crust (remember they have not traveled too far form their orginial lava birthplace) to reach lava underneath. The result is a series of LAVA FOUNTAINS which are glorious to behold but also very deadly. The NOB eggs remain near the surface in this newly exposed lava field until they hatch, and then they begin to consume their Navelium Yolks and slowly grow larval flippers and descend deep into the subterranean lava. They remain there for an unknown time until the cycle repeats itself.

WHY AND HOW HUMANS HUNT THEM - AND THUMP THEM

Humans hunt them because they have biologically refined the very hard to obtain Navelium Ore into Pure Navelium. The humans can obtain large amnounts of Navelium Ore from the immature eggs in the NOB larva when the first emerge from the lava field of their birth, but that is very costly to refine and it is fraught with danger to harvest it. Humans can obtain minimal amounts of Pure Navelium as the NOB Larva start to cool on their journey to the new egg laying site, but the best time for humans to harvest is when the NOB Eggs are just ready to be laid. This is also the most dangerous, as the NOB Larva while cooled relative to their starting temperatures are now extremely rugged and tough and fiercely defensive of their nesting site. There is also the constant danger that a NOB Larva is ready to start the detonation process to lay its egg which will cause the localize lava eruptions and cause grave damage to any human nearby - suited or not.

Humans, to avoid the conflict with the living NOB Larva, will at times when they find a field of solidified NOB Larva dare to try to Thump there in the hope of finding eggs that may have been injected into the ground but not caused micro eruptions. These can be thought of as dud eggs, if you will. The danger here is that Thumping here may start the spontaneous detonation of all the solidified NOB Larva and cataclysmicly destroy all humans and Thumper nearby.

Humans who hunt the NOB Larvae freshly emerged for low yield Pure Navelium and ordinary Navelium Ore, do have to contend with the quick and agile hot NOB Larvae and their ability to fire needle like jets of molten Navelium Ore.

VARIATIONS and VISUALS

In order for us to track them in game, they emerge from the lava very hot and with a great splash of lava which lights up the sky at night for a long distance and creates great smoke clouds which can be seen in the day. As they move to their egg laying spot, they leave trails of solidified droppings. Humans who see the burst of light or smoke from a long distance will arrive at the lava pool to find that the NOB Larvae have moved on, but they are easily trackable by the droppings of solid stone. These stone droppings, when new glow for a time and emit smoke.

At night the glowing trail stands out (yet slowly fades). In the day there is a visible smoke trail over the stone droppings which also slowly fades.

ALL HAIL THE NAVEL!

Of course, the really big ones may have that ever so special Tsi-Hu Artifact inside them made of the rarest of rare Navelium Alloys which remain solid even at the intense heat of the deepest lava fields from which the NOBs emerge...

THE SOLITARY NOB & DERIVED MINI-EVENT

SMALL/MEDIUM NOBS:
The life cycle of the NOBs involves the small to medium sized ones that do not stray very far from their original lava lake of birth - and which make their egg laying sites nearby where the lava is still easily accessible below the crust of EM-8ER resulting often in several smaller lakes in a cluster with sight of the original lava pool (or a fractal like layout of muliple lakes spreading out over the landscape).

THE SOLITARY NOB (SNOB):
The NOB life cycle also includes the rare Solitary NOB, which is a huge HUGE single NOB which is so vast that it can retain enough heat to enable it to traverse far afield away from the birth lava pool

This is how the NOBs spread across long distances.

Small/Medum NOBs stay close to their home lava lake. The vastly larger Solitary NOB (mockingly called a SNOB by humans) has a very different behavior entirely.

THE SNOB LIFE CYCLE START

The Solitary NOB (SNOB) starts its life the same way any other NOB begins its life. It starts from a Novelium Yolk egg deep within a lava pool. It lives in the pool, however, much much longer than the small/medium NOBs. It only emerges when it has reached a VAST size and bulk. It is so deep in the lava that there will be no sign of it's appearance until the rapid breach of the surface when it shoots out of the lava pool not unlike a breaching whale.

In fact, the analogy to a breaching whale is a good one as when it bursts forth finally from the lava pool of birth it is just as dramatic. It explodes upwards out of the pool, sending lava flying and from a distance looking almost like a mini-eruption has taken place.

The emergence of a SNOB from a lava pool can be heard from far off and is a dramatic site both day and night. Players will not miss this event unless buried deep in a crafting shed or in the midst of combat.

THE SNOB LIFE ACTIVITIES WHILE MOBILE

The sold purpose of the emergence of the SNOB is to go forth far far afield from the birth lava pool and find a NEW untapped subterranean lava field to puncture and seed with eggs. The small/medium NOBs do not stray too far from the birth pool. The SNOB's very essense is travel - covering distance.

SNOB Scanning: The SNOB has an appendage which humans the "Bammer" because of the noise it makes "Bamming" the ground not unlike the Firefall scan hammers weilded by players in early Firefall. The SNOB's goal is to travel far, find an underground lava resource, and deposit it's eggs there. In order to find such a new, hidden lava pool the SNOB uses the Bammer. As it travels it continually "Bams" the ground waiting to catch the resonance of a concealed pool of lava. There, it will complete it's life cycle.

Players can hear the Bammer in action, and they may also if nearby see the smoking and glowing SNOB as it travels acroos the lands in search of hidden lava.

As for small/medium NOBs as the SNOB travels it slowly cools and refines internally its Navelium Ore into pure Navelium. In the case of the SNOB, rather than one Navelium Yolk egg, it produces a mass of them.

THE SNOB FINAL STAGE OF LIFE

Egg Maturation: When the SNOB has traveled far enough and by using its Bammer it has found a suitable hidden, underground, lava pool, it stops traveling. If it has crystalized sufficient Navelium Ore it starts immediately on the next phase of its life. If it has prematurely found a new pool to exploid underground, it may linger above the hidden lava for a long time as it creates sufficient Pure Navelium to provide enough Navelium Yolk for all of its eggs.

Crust Cracking: When it has its full complement of eggs supplied sufficiently with Navelium Yolk, then as all NOBs it explosively cracks the crust injecting its cache of eggs into the lava below and simultaneously creating a new lava pool which will be the birth pool for all the eggs injected into the lava during this process. This is reported to be an event even more spectacular and loud that anything ever before encountered by NOB researchers.

THE MONOLITH - SNOB REMAINS

After the SNOB has cracked the crust, exposed the lava to create a new pool, and injected its eggs into the lava it finally has reached the end of its life and rapidly solidifies into what is called "The Monolith" as it appears and indeed has become effectivly a massive stone monolithic marker towering above the new lava pool for 1000s of years to come.

============== PLAYER COMBAT WITH THE SNOB and/or THE SNOB MONOLITH LAVA POOL ===============

THE NEW LAVA POOL & RESULTING MINI-EVENT

As soon as the new eggs have turned to larva, in a very short time thereafter, there emerge many (sometimes it is reported up to a dozen or more) Flocks of NOB Larvae which follow the small/medium NOB life cycle of emerging in small groups from their birth pool and traveling short to moderate distances (during which travel they create their eggs and Navelium Yolks) to follow the NOB cycle of explosive egg implantation and lava pool creation.

The result is that a MINI-EVENT for players is possible.

What is created as far as the players are concerned here is a SNOB Monolith dramatically looming over the lava pool the SNOB created when it implanted its eggs and any number of masses of small/medium NOB flocks in various stages of the NOB lifecycle. This is a huge concentration of NOBs all in one place (when there are sufficient players to warrant it), or if only a few players encounter this event it may onliy be 3 or 4 NOB flocks which have emerged.

On occasions where it is a major event, it can be that many many NOB flocks have emerged, seeded new lava pools themselves, and those new pools have in turn given rise to new NOB flocks. This can create a patchwork of NOB flocks and lava pools all around the original SNOB Monolith and pool.

THE SNOB ENCOUNTER - BEFORE IT REACHES FULL EGG MATURITY

Players may also encounter the SNOB as it wanders about using its Bammer in search of Lava. In this encounter, the amount of Pure Navelium will be less than in a later encounter, but it will still be substantial. Because of the sheer size of the SNOB many players will be required to bring it down and share in the harvest of Navelium Ore and Pure Navelium.

THE ARTIFACT

While at times a small or medium NOB may have inside it a small Tsi-Hu artifact (only those which can withstand the heat of a lava pool will ever be found, of course), the SNOB almost always will have during it's long growth cycle incorporated at least one Tsi-He artifact. This, lucky for players, it a natural occurence due to the nature of the SNOB evolution deep in the lava and it is a rare SNOB indeed which does not have a nice artifact as loot.

The exception to this is that the SNOB Monolith, during it's explosive injection of eggs and crust breaking often injects the artifacts it may have contained deep into the lava pool it is opening up. These artifacts, however, may emerge with the NOB flocks that come from the new pool, or at times due to density differentials may diffuse to the perimiters of the pools and be obtainable by THMPR. This is highly dangerous Thumping, since one risks prematurely stirring up NOB flocks out of their lava pools - and there may be an abundance of such pools at an older SNOB Monolith site.

I installed Unreal 4 SDK last night and made my noob effort to use it to create a video showing a bit of the Novelium Ore Bug idea.

See:

There is some time dilation, as it were.

1) Start

In the first part the player stumbles across or sees from a distance the fire bursts when the NOBs emerge from an existing lava pool (which is more like tar in the video as I can't make lava yet).

This makes the player go investigate.

2) Tracking

In the next part, the player visits the lava pool and then follows the trail of cooling pellets.

NOTE: Normally (if I had more Unreal 4 expertise, I could do it now) the player if he comes quick enough to the lava burst when the NOBs emerge will end up (if he chooses) in combat with the newly emerged NOBs.

In the video, they have already left and given the player a trail to track.

3) Finding the nesting site

In the video the player follows the trail of droppings to the nesting site.

The NOBs are in the video example ready to explosively inject their eggs into the crust having sensed there is a lava pool near the crust surface.

The layer approaches, and he inadvertently sets off the NOBs explosive injections and the result is a new lava pool and some dangerous consequences.

The same would be true if he wanted the use a THMPR at this area to hunt for Novelium which might have been laid down in 'dud' eggs...

Hope it helps explain things a bit...

Ha ha!

I was thinking, and I forgot to mention that when the NOBs emerge from the lava they can somewhat regulate their cooling to maximize the quality of the Pure Novelium crystallizing inside them from the molten Novelium Ore.

Not unlike how a bird can fluff its feathers when it gets cold, the NOB can create a kind of sponge like (but rigid) insulation reminiscent of some of the air pocket / bubble filled lavas whijch can form on Earth - the kind which can be less dense than water.

This also has the benefit of allowing them to travel further before cooling off too much and to continue moving for a longer time before the stiffen up from the cold.

It goes without saying that the SNOB also utilizes this trick to enable it to travel as far as it does when it is searching for a new lava source.

COMBAT FUN FACTOR

The fun for players is that this kind of low density material breaks off and fractures in huge hunks and pieces so that when the players engage NOBs with this kind of insulating coat they get a rather spectacular display of destruction and mayhem.

NAVELIUM ORE BUG | BIRTHPOOL & HUSKS
- LEADING TO EVENTS AND INFO ON NOBs IN THE AREA

Here is another video (with audio no less!) about the NOBs life cycle. Specifically, it shows the idea of how the husks they leave when they first emerge from the Birthpool give players information on:

1) Where the Birthpool is located
2) How many NOB Larvae emerged
3) How recently they emerged
4) How big the NOBs which came out are

Following clues leads to knowing:
5) Where the molted NOBs went
6) How the NOBs are cooling off - what they'll be like when you find them...

Events can be:
1) Thumping at the pool for Novelium Egg Yolks
2) Harvesting materials from the Husks themselves
3) Following the NOB trail to hunt the NOB
4) Fighting large NOB Larvae that molt away from the pool
5) Dealing with more Larvae emerging at any time

Note: This a refinement from previously. The Larvae emerge (an event as described before). They molt, then they go off on their journey of recrystallizing the Navelium Ore to Pure Navelium for their egg yolks regulating temperature for perfect crystal formation by dropping heat in hot pellets and regulating their insulating outer layers of "shell".

NOB BIRTHPOOL
The NOB Birthpool is the lava pool in which the NOB Larvae hatched from eggs. This is the lava pool created when a fully mature adult NOB explosively injects its egg(s) through the crust into subterranean lava and creates a new surface lava pool (the Birthpool when the eggs hatch).

NOB HUSKS - FIRST MOLT
When the NOBs Larvae first emerge from the Birthpool the very first thing they do is molt. They leave behind a semi-crystalline Husk (which can be smashed up and harvested for some meager resources). These husks are very light in weight and roundish in shape so they will blow in the wind if it is strong enough or roll down hills. Their presence gives players clues that a Birthpool is nearby (if the player has not yet found it).

In the video example, they come rolling down a slight hill which indicates to the player that the Birthpool is up that hill...

NOB HUSKS - FRESHNESS and SIZE
The NOB Husks immediately give the player an indication of how many NOBs have hatched from that pool, how big the NOBs are, and how recently they emerged. Abundance of Husks tells how many NOBs hatched. Size of Husks alerts players to how big they are. Steaminess of Husks tells how recently the molt took place.

HOW THIS DIFFERS FROM FINDING A FRESH EMERGENCE
When a player finds (or is introduced to) this encounter by finding Husks, it is AFTER the NOBs have emerged and Molted. The player does not see the actual emergence of the NOB Larvae - that has taken place some time ago in this kind of event. The player finds the pool from which they emerged, learns about how many etc. and has the chance to pause and Thump, smash up some Husks or just set out after the NOBs themselves.

Things not mentioned in the audio:

1) THUMPING: As when NOBs deposit eggs and crack crust to make a new lava pool, not all are successful so there are likely going to be NOB Eggs with Pure Novelium Yolks buried around the pool. Thump to dig them up (e.g. score some Pure Novelium). This likely may cause bad things to happen... combat...

2) You may encounter NOB Larvae still emerging at the pool or when following the NOB trails. The larger NOB Larvae often move farther from the Birthpool to molt - and the largest of NOBs (the SNOBs) are so vast in size even as Larvae that they often will not molt near the pools at all and when following the trail away from the Birthpool to hunt for NOBs of small or medium size one may encounter a SNOB in larval form... an event in and of itself.

For tonight we added a concept for what a NOB adult might look like (a rather approximate rendition) and added to the Birthpool mock-up the solidified NOB adults which originally created the pools.

The full tour:

The NOB egg depositors and smashing up:

The NOB adults when ready and having found a site to pierce the crust to expose lava beneath and create a new lava pool, deposit their eggs explosively to fracture the crust and then expire. Their carcasses will remain and gradually solidify or crystallize depending upon the environment. The player may therefore discover these old NOB adult carcasses in and around the lava pool (from which the eggs may have hatched already):
NOB Birthpool with parents.jpg

The first draft (very crude) of what perhaps a NOB adults looks like, and some features that are present include crude fins on the NOB backs which allow them to selectively dissipate heat to maintain the exact rate of cooling desired to recrystallize the Navelium Ore perfectly (as well as their ability to insulate, they need an ability to slough off heat as well):
NOB Fins.jpg

At the rear end, the real business end, of the adult NOB are the lobes in which the eggs are formed and the egg depositor from which the eggs are explosively injected as the crust is fractured to create the lava Birthpool:
NOB lobes and depositor at pool.jpg

The expired adult NOB carcasses remain there until destroyed by violence, and over time become brittle and crystalline. Their smashing may yield valuable resources if they might contain an egg that never was deposited, and smashing always yields mayhem and at least a little bit of resources:

Thanks. I never used Unreal before, so I am using this concept "demo" as a reason to start using it more. I'll try to make some more things when time permits.

I hope to get some animations and spawning going to show how the NOBs can go seed a new area and then have them spread out like a fungus where the lava pools are like the fruiting bodies...

Here with some delay...

Tonight there is now half way decent lava, some night combat, an actual weapon, jump jetting, Navelium Ore Bug Grubs large and small and various other things.

Here are a few videos showing some night combat scenes at a NOB Birthpool with real lava and plenty of grubs. These have some tweaks to make them more fun at night.

As usual, the adults have come and either found an existing lava pool and laid eggs in it which are hatching into NOB Grubs, or the adults earlier cracked the crust to make a lava pool where there was not one before to create the NOB Grub hatchery.

The big Grubs wander far from the pools often before they molt to become adults, while the little grubs tend to stay close to the Birthpool and look for lava nearby when they are adults. One may find a really big NOB Grub or NOB Adult far far from the original Birthpool.

Events can expand because the NOB Grubs can molt, become adults, and crack open crust for new lava pools or lay eggs in nearby lava pools that already are on the surface. Then through "magic" time dilation, the eggs hatch and turn into more NOB Grubs almost instantly so the landscape can quickly become a vast patchwork of Grub spawning lava pools, wander Grubs, molting Grubs, and NOB Adults of all sizes.

Those grubs are relentless they have a ninja look to them with glowing visor!
I like that there is a health bar too and the gun is strange is that an experimental alien weapon?

It is experimental in the sense that it is an alien Tsi-Hu artifact being tuned by the humans to be a grub zapper. It is also experimental in the sense that I as an experiment wanted to make a different weapon than the default UR4 one. Two experiments in one. This whole thing is a big experiment for me in UR4. Hence, things may deviate form normality if they feel like fun things to make happen.

After a long delay...

Here are some more videos and (soon) some screenshots of the latest update to the Navelium Ore Bug mini-event or mini-game.

Added are:

* Procedural (spontaneous) creation of Lava Calderas by wandering NOBs such that they can create a lava source (and then eventually a new Lava Pool spawning more NOBs) anywhere on the map.

* Combat to beat back the NOBs by destroying their Lava Pools and making them start fresh.

* Weapon now does direct damage and a kind of AOE damage based on projectile debris.

* Lava Pools that ebb and flow and which will fill up with NOBs attending to them, or which you can beat back and make drain.

* Placeholders (white blobs) for the cooling process as the NOBs wander and regulate their temperature. You can see a trail of these and follow it to a big NOB and usually a Caldera at the end of the trail.

This one shows some of these latest concepts:

If you fail to slay enough NOBs and keep the Lava Pools empty, the landscape will transform to one of Lava Calderas, full Lava Pools and countless wandering NOBs: Aug2 NOB LavaLandscape.JPG

Lava Calderas can be created by NOBs anywhere on the landscape and at any time. They can then be nurtured by the NOBs to become full blown Lava Pools and become a source for more NOBs:

Aug2 NOB Random Calderas.JPG

Here are two more videos of the latest concept.

Because the Lava Calderas are procedural based on where the NOBs wander, every time one plays the landscape is completely different from any other time:

and

More shooting of a NOB Beacon to make a Lava Pool (regular sort of Lava Pool) go down. Above, you can see a Lava Caldera spawned by a wandering NOB:

Aug2 NOB Beacon Shooting 2.JPG
When you destroy a NOB Beacon for a Lava Pool or Lava Caldera, the Pool will drain and the NOBs have to create a new Beacon and Nurture it to get the Pool to fill up again and begin to spawn NOBs.

If you fail to beat back the NOB advance, the landscape will soon begin to get overwhelmed with full Lava Pools and Lava Calderas and more and more wandering NOBs which make more Lava Calderas:

Aug2 NOB Beacon and Pools Lots of Em.JPG

Here is a random screen capture of where two Lava Calderas got place by the wandering NOBs. One down below on the right and one up above on the left. They can appear anywhere at any time depending upon where the NOBs wandered about on the landscape:

This would sure look amazing at night wondering about and finding those becons to take care off. Making sure you manage your light power or thermal imaging otherwise your going blind apart from the natural light source of the lava!

This looks great and would there be variation of other nobs that spit out fire? or curl up and turn into a flaming ball rolling after you, even flying one's that drop fire poop??

I have yet to make ranged damage ones. Right now they just run around after you and bump you with their faces.

I have vague ideas (as in the NOB Lore) of them squirting molten rock or such.

I made some (not in the videos) enemies that are fiery and skitter about and will splash damage you with fire, but they are not prime time ready yet.

I really like the idea of flying NOBs dropping molten fire scat!

I also want more things to shoot up out of the Calderas. There should be localized areas that are dangerous with fire and gases...

I'll add that to the feature list!
