What gif? There is one video that shows how to easily obtain the UserID by coping the profile url. The url part should get stripped down on paste. Otherwise just username.id can be inserted. Or do you mean link you need to put into status? The image and the text clearly state you need to...

All the time. This is a technique called rubber ducking and often helps programmers. From wikipedia:

Plugged in bit of a magic, widget now updates in realtime. Including counts, message adds/updates/deletes. Try adding message, edit it and then delete it to see all 3 effects.

I see no downsides beside being reliant on 3rd party service. But if I compare beta of Firefall and how chat was broken half the time and beta of Discord which derped like only once or twice in a year I don't think one can do much better with inhouse solution. Discord is great and we all love it. These guys outdid themselves again and created SDK for game-makers to implement their awesome technology within games. It's middleware worth considering not just because of great features it provides, but also because ... It's FREE! And best things in life...
